The plot for the movie “Aquaman” is simple: An ordinary light-house keeper rescues the Queen of Atlantis during a strong storm, and they have a child named Arthur Curry, who, as an adult, is known as Aquaman. In my opinion, “Aquaman,” directed by James Wan, is the best Detective Comics (DC) Extended Universe movie that has ever been made, better than even the classic DC movies like “Batman” or “Superman.”
Arthur, played by icon Jason Mamoa, inherits his mother’s powers and her trident. As Arthur grows up, he is taught how to control his powers and use them for defense and attack. For example, he can create a shield by spinning his mother’s trident in front of his body at a super fast speed. He can breathe underwater and his eyes can see everything clearly in the water as if he has night vision. He can swim extremely fast as well. Although Aquaman is only half Atlantean, his powers rival those of the king of Atlantis.
For most Atlanteans, water is their best element to fight in, but for Aquaman, he prefers fighting on land. He defends the people of his city, and simultaneously defends the ocean from the pirates. For example, he has fought and defeated the group of pirates led by Black Manta’s father. Aquaman fought his way into a submarine to save innocent victims from the pirates. Black Manta teams up with King Orm, who provides Black Manta with Atlantean technology and weaponry that he should use to pursue and kill Aquaman. Among those weapons, Black Manta is given a large ray gun. Instead of just using the ray gun as it is, Manta thinks outside of the box and creates for himself a suit of armor. The helmet is made to look like the fish that he was named after, the Manta Ray. He uses the ray gun technology, takes apart the gun, and uses the pieces to add two laser eyes onto his battle suit. Black Manta made modifications so that he can breathe underwater.
King Orm (AKA Ocean Master) is portrayed exactly like he was in the comic books, which is fairly surprising because I thought he would have been a complicated villain to portray perfectly in a movie. Patrick Wilson played the part of King Orm so well. His acting really made me feel as if he was King Orm. He was perhaps the only actor who could have played King Orm so well.
I must say, if the DC Extended Universe movie franchise is good for something, it is definitely their soundtracks. The soundtrack for the movie “Aquaman,” composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams, was excellent. When you see Black Manta for the first time, you hear an ominous tune, and it slowly gets faster, which is a great way to represent him. In the beginning, he was just a simple pirate, but as he progressed, he made himself a battle suit, and he went on to fight against kings and queens of the ocean. The theme music when you see King Orm incorporates aspects from Black Mantas theme, but makes them better and faster, and it gives you chills during the movie at perfect times.
I have gone over all of the pro’s, and all of the cons of the “Aquaman” movie, and I am proud to give this movie a four out of five stars. Go watch “Aquaman” today!
